Central City East : Downtown Los Angeles

Living and Writing from the heart of skid row since 1999. Blogging since 2004.

Thursday, May 17

Eric Richardson says that the situation was epic , too bad Bert didn't have a camera so we could have celebrated at least on the blogs.

Sure....... Eric is gloating that the toilet is working now , but I and the Council District 9 office had a working toilet down here on 5th and San Julian for a couple of years already ,and we all worked hard to get them to downtown. Turning on the lights is the easy part.

SO don't think to try and steal the thunder from Jan Perry and Nick Pacheco and Jeff Catalano. I am not going to let you.......After the photos is a Council index file that details the ATP at San Julian Park , note the city worked with SRO Housing Corporation to get this pilot APT. And it was the residents of SRO Housing Corporation who wanted the APT and to show it could work , when it did , then the rest downtown didn't have a problem, so don't think by any means it was the loft residents who were instrumental in getting these toilets,:it was the people of skid row....... once we got the critical mass of loft dwellers in the City Center, then , there was enough residential support there to augment the already huge support from the poor residents in skid row to put them up . So be sure to thank the people of skid row for your toilet.

Title
AUTOMATED SELF-CLEANING PUBLIC TOILETS / SAN JULIAN PARK
Initiated by
Perry Mover 2003 / LaBonge
Subject
Motion - In conjunction with the public amenity kiosks and transit shelters provided through the City's Coordinated Street Furniture Program, Viacom Decaux LLC will be installing and maintaining AUTOMATED SELF-CLEANING PUBLIC TOILETS (APTs) at various locations in the City.
There are currently plans to install an automated self-cleaning public toilet (APT) at the San Julian Park in Council District Nine, to address the need for sanitary toilet facilities. There are currently porta-potties at this location which are not only an eye sore, but are also contributing to community blight, inasmuch as they cannot be cleaned as quickly as they need to be in order to accommodate their heavy rate of usage. This is not a sanitary situation for the surrounding community.
The automated self-cleaning public toilet at San Julian Park will automatically clean and sanitize all interior surfaces of the toilet, after each use. Further, they are more attractive than porta-potties and will be manually cleaned and maintained numerous times each day.
In conjunction with the installation of the automated self-cleaning public toilet, the Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Housing Corporation will be undertaking a streetscape beautification project on San Julian and 5th Streets, which will benefit public transit users in the area. There are funds available in the Council District Nine account in the Street Furniture Revenue Fund to partially fund this streetscape project, which is an appropriate use of these funds.
THEREFORE MOVE that the Council, subject to the approval of the Mayor:
1. Transfer $18,000 from the Council District Nine account of the Street Furniture Revenue Fund No. 43D Department 50 to the General City Purposes Fund No. 100-56, Account No. 0709 (Council District Nine Community Services) and be allocated therefrom to Single Room Occupancy (SRO) Housing Corporation to provide funding for streetscape improvements at 5th and San Julian Streets, in the vicinity of San Julian Park.
2. Instruct the City Clerk to prepare the necessary contract in the above specified amount and for the above stated purpose, subject to City Attorney approval as to form and legality.
3. Authorize the Councilmember of the Ninth (9th) District to execute the contract on behalf of the City.
