Council Woman Jan Perry has kept her word . The toilets are now working in Central City East. God Bless this woman for all of the hard work she has done on behalf of the residents at SRO Housing Corporation and on behalf of the many employees in the Central City East Community ,which many of you call skid row. The toilets are working. I want to thank esp. the Union Rescue Mission for allowing the toilet that they allowed to be located near their entrance.Making sure the door is working properly
This was a promise that Jan Perry had made to us almost 7 years ago. It seems like forever, but she did it. At least I love you Jan and, Jeff Catalano... I know you worked hard on our behalf too , so... you go boy!!!!

Los Angeles, June 15, 2007—Councilwoman Jan Perry today celebrated the opening of the newest Automated Public Toilet in the Central City East area of Downtown Los Angeles. She was joined by representatives from the City’s Department of Public Works, CBS/Decaux and various local stakeholders for a ribbon cutting ceremony to launch the new Automated Public Toilet (APT) located at 6th and San Pedro Street in front of the Union Rescue Mission.
The automated public toilets being installed are self-contained and following each use, are automatically cleaned, disinfected and dried. The toilets are supplied and managed by CBS/Decaux. The APT project will decrease nuisance activities, like urinating or defecating in public and provide persons needing access to a public facility with a clean and safe alternative. The new toilets will allow the local homeless, tourists, and pedestrians to make use of the self-cleaning toilets. The APT’s will complement the public toilets located throughout the city, with most situated in parks and community centers.
Within a month, a total of 5 new APT’s will be activated along some of the busiest streets throughout the City of Los Angeles. Each APT's oval-shaped kiosk contains a small toilet and a sink. While some APT's cost 25 cents per use, the Central City East facilities are free of charge to the homeless.
“The city recognized that we needed something better, safer and more efficient when it came to public toilets. Because of CBS/Decaux’s success in other major cities across the globe, we decided to partner and help move our city forward. These new toilets are designed to be a more dignified, safer and cleaner alternative to the port-a-potties previously used by the city,” said Councilwoman Perry.
The new toilet will complement the unit located on 5th and San Julian Street, which registers an average of 4,000 entries per month. This is the most used of any APT anywhere in the United States. The public toilets are part of the city's Coordinated Street Furniture Program, which was introduced in 2000 and approved by the Council in 2001.
The city is contracting with CBS/Decaux, a joint-venture company that provides and maintains bus shelters, information kiosks, newspaper racks and the APT's. CBS/Decaux has a team of technicians on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week that responds to malfunction signals transmitted from sensor devices For Immediate Release
